Project Overview

Sketchnote is a web application to help first-time and seasoned entrepreneurs, plus their businesses. It aims to help entrepreneurs manage their tasks, schedules, and projects more efficiently. The app is targeted towards people who need to balance multiple responsibilities and are looking for a tool to streamline their workflow.

Problem

Despite its success, Sketchnote's outdated user interface (UI) and unintuitive Kanban and Whiteboard features were hindering user satisfaction and engagement.

Research

User research revealed key pain points:
1. Cluttered and overwhelming UI, especially on smaller screens
2. Ineffective Kanban feature
3. Inadequate Whiteboard feature for effective sprint planning
4. Need for website redesign to align with the product's evolved capabilities

Design System

To ensure consistency throughout the app, a comprehensive design system was implemented, encompassing a defined color palette, typography, and UI components. A clean and minimalistic approach was adopted for UI components, featuring simple icons and buttons with clear outlines and subtle animations for enhanced feedback and interactivity.

Redesign

Guided by the design system and user research findings, the redesign process focused on simplifying the UI, enhancing navigation, and adopting a modern, calming color scheme.

Kanban enhancements:
1. Drag-and-drop functionality for quick task status updates
2. Task notes, attachments, and comments for detailed organization
3. Kanban board analytics for tracking progress and identifying bottlenecks
4. Task labels for prioritization and categorization

Whiteboard improvements:
1. Customizable whiteboards with templates, backgrounds, colors, and layouts
2. Image, video, text, and file insertion for diverse content management
3. Organization tools like sticky notes, shapes, lines, and text boxes for effective idea structuring
4. Cleaner and more modern look with improved navigation and zoom for enhanced usability

Impact

Through user testing and iterative refinements, the redesigned Kanban board with a simpler flow of information resulted in a remarkable 56% increase in retention rate. This success highlights the importance of user-centered design in enhancing user satisfaction and engagement.
